An important component of DLPA extra is the amino acid phenylalanine. It is an essential amino acid that our body cannot create on its own and therefore must be supplied through diet or through nutritional supplements. It is a substance that increases the level of endorphins (happiness hormones) in the central nervous system. DLPA is a combination of two forms of phenylalanine - the L-form and the D-form.

The L-form is important for increasing the production of dopamine (one of the hormones of happiness) and noradrenaline (a stress hormone that prepares our body and brain for a rapid response, a hormone of mental alertness) - these neurotransmitters, transmitters of nerve impulses, have overall stimulating effects on organism. Lower levels of norepinephrine increase our hypersensitivity to fatigue, depression or pain. The L-form of phenylalanine slows down the process of mental aging, improves the ability to learn and remember, and improves mood. The D-form affects chemicals in the brain that are associated with pain and suppresses states of depression.
