Organ Version with Authentic Voice of Cellos and Double Basses ad libitum

  • First urtext edition with newly discovered cello and double bass parts
  • The most authentic version of the organ mass
  • Possibility of assigning solo parts to choir singers
  • Trilingual foreword and critical report (in English) by the editor

Dvořák's Mass in D major, composed in 1887 for the consecration of the chapel at the Lužany Castle at the request of the patron Josef Hlávka, was originally intended for mixed choir and organ with minimal use of solos. It has technically straightforward vocal parts, and the simple expressive means correspond to the purpose for which it was written. Additionally, the possibility of a smaller choir and assigning solos to choir members allows even non-professional church choirs to perform the work.

  • For the new critical edition, the editor chose as the main source the second copy of the score by Jan Elsnice, with Dvořák's own added parts for lower strings. This source, owned by the Novello publishing house (now housed in the British Library), had been overlooked or incorrectly evaluated in previous editions, despite the fact that the composer clearly considered this version of the mass final before orchestrating the work at Novello's request. For the first time, the original organ version of the Mass in D major is now published in its final form, including the added cello and double bass parts.
  • This new edition thus represents the most credible and mature version of the work before its orchestration. In addition to the large score with a dedicated foreword and a comprehensive critical report by the editor and a separate string part, this edition also includes a practical ''organ reduction'' without the cello and double bass parts, allowing the mass to be performed either with the added string parts or without them.
